Lord Phillips Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfiedl (1694-1773) commissioned a craftsman for the first buttoned leather Chester sofa with a low back and a low base seat. The original objective of the furniture was that a gentleman could sit upright in maximum comfort without wrinkling the suits. Since the early 19th century, Chesterfield chairs have been used to set the scene for London’s exclusive and elite men’s social clubs. In the following decades it passed into the salons of British houses of high society and later became popular until it became an icon of British decoration; the classic English sofa par excellence.
